I need advise for how to take care of pet fish

Main Post:

If I get a pair of green swordtails, what should I prepare of having? How big does the aquarium need to be, do I need plants, do I need oxygen pumps, do I need to change the water everyday or any medication liquid drops for the water? Or anything I miss or misunderstood, tips?

Top Comment: Typical tank maintenance after cycling is a 25% water change each week, take put 25% of the water, and replace it with new water thats been treated with your tap water dechlorinator.

Advice for taking care of fish.

Main Post:

What do you do when you wake up and your auntie simple GIVES you two...small black fish?? The fish came with a bowl, some stones and a bag of fish food and this fish medicine thing to keep water clean? First of all, I accidentally overfed them so I cleaned the bowl. I put in five small seashells and just rinsed the stones and put them back in. I put in home filtered water, not too cold temp. Now I'm really just sitting here at a loss of what to do...

Please help. What do I do? Get a bigger bowl or decor? and my fish just either shat or has a worm in the last picture what the fuck is that.

I wanna try my best to be a good fish owner and treat them as my dear pets so I'd really appreciate some advice. Thank you :) P.S. I don't know their breed (thanks auntie) but they might be Black Molly fish?

Top Comment: Well that was not cool of her but glad they’re with someone who wants to take good care of them. Those look to be Dalmatian mollies. That one is pooping. Unfortunately these would need at least a 10 gallon tank at minimum. But the issue is you have one girl and one boy so they will reproduce, and mollies reproduce A LOT. You’ll need a heater, an airstone and a filter. Their water needs to be between 75-80F. It’s gonna be a bit difficult bc u don’t have a cycled tank. Meaning the water will eventually have an ammonia spike that could kill them. I would get an api test kit, some quick start, and some plants for them to hide. Typically you should have 3 females to 1 male bc the males are a bit 🍆🍆 and you don’t want him pestering just the one to death and stressing her out. But if you just keep the two and get a bigger tank and some plants and stuff for hiding you may be ok. You’ll have to test the water regularly for at least a month to avoid spikes in nitrite and ammonia. Only do 20% water changes weekly right now until the ammonia spike. You could mess up the cycling process of your tank.

Main Post:

Top Comment: Silver clothes, pearl costume for fish but just wear the head once you hit pro, you want to use a tailoring coupon to tailor the pro fish clothes and wear that. Max xp and max fish + speed. You should be able to hit 5 without food so is always active. Then brand a bal rod and brand a maple float +10 both. Use life xp buff pets. Rock sute tea. Use xp elixers if active fishing. Get all 192 slots. Source: I'm master 16 fishing on one char and master 1 on another.

/r/Aquariums Beginner's Guide?

Main Post:

I've really enjoyed this community since I joined a month ago. However, in those past few weeks, I've noticed that a large portion of visitors here come looking for very basic introductory advice. Having only gotten back into the hobby several years ago after college, I remember how difficult it was to find reliable information amid the sea of bad advice out there. I think this subreddit serves a valuable role in that regard. However, I'm afraid some questions might slip through the cracks if they submit their post at off-peak hours. I was hoping that the more experienced members could come up with a "Beginner's Guide" to fishkeeping. Then, we could link it in the sidebar next to the article on fishless cycling, ensuring that everyone gets their basic questions answered.

I've come up with a rough version based on my own knowledge, offering advice assuming people are totally new to fishkeeping. In that spirit, I've left out more advanced topics like lighting, CO2, alternative filters, etc. If this idea has support, please correct any errors or misconceptions present in my writeup, or otherwise offer criticisms (too detailed, too much left out, etc). I've posted it by sections in the comments, which should make it easier to point out what needs to be changed. I hope this becomes a community effort. Since my experience is limited to freshwater fish, this guide is limited to that realm. If this turns out to be useful, I hope someone else will contribute a guide for saltwater tanks as well.

Now this is a story all about how

My life got flipped-turned upside down

And I'd like to take a minute just sit right there

I'll tell you every thing you need to know about fish care

In the Indo-Pacific born and raised

On the coral reef is where I spent most of my days

Swimmin' about, eatin', spreading my genes,

Avoiding predators and listening to whale screams

When a couple of divers who were up to no good

Started making trouble in my neighborhood

I got in one lil net and I got all scared

And said "I hope my new owner isn't goddamned stupid when it comes to fish care"

You have to keep a stable temperature day after day,

And check your PH, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate

When you buy a fish make sure it's healthy when you pick it

Acclimate it and make sure it gets along with conspecifics,

Cycle your tank before you add

Your ammonia spike should be a thing of the past

Did you feed your fish in the morning? Did you feed them at night?

What they can eat in 2 minutes should be alright

But what about dirty water accumulating and all that

Changing 20% of the water every 2 weeks should solve that

Check your equipment,

For wear and tear

Surface current is fair to get disolved air

Well, lighting is important for corals and plants to come out

There is a dude who works at your fish store, willing to help you out out

Sunlight can spawn algae:

Bubble and hair

When the tank was move away from windows, it disappeared

I whistled for an employee and one came near

He said "R/O filters are fresh and chlorine is feared"

If anytime you say "I can stuff more in there"

aqadvisor.com 's calculator makes sure there's water to share.

I was dumped into the tank about 7 or 8

And I yelled at the ocean 'Yo homes smell ya later'

I looked at my kingdom

I was finally there

To sit in my tank as the Prince of Fish Care

How to properly take care of fish?

Main Post:

So my family has had a 50 gallon tank ( I think its 50) for years. And now I want to take it over and seriously get into fish. Were and what is the best info to find / read about starting off and taking actually good care for my fish? Thanks!

Top Comment: First youre going to want to do some research on the nitrogen cycle and fishless cycling, i recommend youtube for that, trafish aquatics has a good guide. In terms of info about what fish need in terms of water paremetres and tank size, i generally use seriouslyfish.com and species profiles on youtube (especially prime time aquatics’ channel).

Any ideas for an "easy" fish to care for?

Main Post:

Long story short my friend's 10 year old wants a fish and I'm trying to find one that would be somewhat easier to care for as a beginner fish. His mom said she's willing to buy a starter 10 gallon tank that comes with a heater and filter. While he will feed the fish everyday and clean the tank appropriately, he probably isn't going to do things like test PH levels.

He went to PetSmart the other day and apparently wanted some sort of cichlid, but from my own experience with fish I don't think that's the best idea for his situation. I recommended a goldfish (although some could outgrow his 10G tank) or a betta given that he has a heater.

Any other ideas? He's a kid so I'm trying to find him a "cool" fish as he describes but I think most of the tropical fish need to have PH levels monitored and I doubt he or his parents will do that. In my experience, bettas and goldfish are pretty hardy and could probably still do ok without constant PH level monitoring. But I'm interested in hearing what you all have to say.

Thanks for the help!

Top Comment: Definitely not goldfish, I’d go betta

I'm a fish keeping newbie and I don't want to mess it up.

Main Post:

Hello!

I've always wanted a big fish tank, and for my birthday my so bought me a 20 gallon starter kit. I've since been compulsively researching everything I can about starting up a freshwater tank.

I would ultimately like to have 6-8 neon tetras, 6-8 black phantom tetras, and two mystery snails (those little buggers are freaking adorable) with fake plants, except for a moss ball (possibly). I know a lot of people are big proponents of live plants, but I'm quite sure I want to go the plastic route to start.

I've looked up how to cycle the tank, how to check if it's ready for fish with a test kit, and what sort of equipment I'll need. I've read on how to acclimate the fish once they're purchased and how many to add at a time. I feel like I've done pretty good groundwork, and since I'm moving at the end of December I'll have until then plus however long it takes the tank to cycle to continue learning before I buy any fish. Ain't no way I'm moving a 20 gallon tank stocked with fish. If the fish don't die from the stress I might.

The problem is I still have no idea what I'm doing. I've only ever had one fish (a goldfish won at a fair as a child) and he died overnight the same day I got him. Every article and FAQ I read seems to bring up more questions. Only add one fish at a time, but buy tetras in a minimum group of six. Clean the filter regularly but don't clean it or you'll kill the good bacteria and consequently all your fish. Live plants take no extra work but are just like caring for an extra fish. Get bottom feeders to help clean up the tank but don't expect your bottom feeders to help clean the tank. Tetras are a good starter fish except they're weak and will die if you look at them wrong. Only add fish the week of the autumnal equinox, and only if the moon is full and you've completed your sacrifice to the Norse gods within the last 72 hours.

The bottom line is I've gone from being super excited to start my first tank to being convinced that no mere mortal can handle an aquarium and the whole thing will end with my crying into a handful of dead fish. Am I panicking over nothing? Is this as hard as it seems? How in God's name do I keep my fish in schools of six while only adding one at a time? Do I need to use a live goat for the sacrifice to Odin or will lamb chops suffice?

As you can see, I'm clearly in need of some help. Anything you can offer will be greatly appreciated and paid back in the form of pictures of my cat.

Top Comment: First thing's first. Breathe. Ok, so fishkeeping is not THAT hard especially for freshwater. The more you read, the deeper you will sink in to this perfectionist anecdotal hole. Fish are much more forgiving than you are lead to believe but the bare minimum must be covered. All you really need to know is that you need to cycle your tank and keep up with water changes. Your goal of keeping fish heavily relies on water quality. Once you cycle your tank, you can go to the fish store and add a school of tetras. The cycle allows your bacteria to be able to convert 40ppm of ammonia in a 24 hr period. Addin a single tetra one day at a time is useless because it wont make 40ppm of ammonia on its own. Take all anecdotal evidence with a grain of salt. Keep you bacteria submerged in tank water while moving and you should be able to keep it alive.
